When to use this calculator
Use this FIRE calculator to estimate a financial independence target and the time it may take to reach it. It is useful for testing spending, savings rate and expected investment return assumptions.
Formula
FIRE target = annual spending x 25
- Annual spending estimates the income your portfolio needs to support.
- Current investments are counted toward the FIRE target.
- Monthly investing and expected return estimate progress toward the target.
Worked example
For $60,000 annual spending, the 25x shortcut gives a $1.5 million FIRE target. With $150,000 saved and $2,000 invested monthly, the calculator estimates the time to reach it.
Common mistakes
- Treating the 25x rule as a guarantee.
- Ignoring taxes, healthcare, housing changes or sequence-of-return risk.
- Using current spending without thinking about post-FIRE lifestyle.
FAQs
What does FIRE mean?
FIRE stands for financial independence, retire early. The goal is to build enough assets to make work optional.
Why use 25x spending?
It is based on a 4% withdrawal-rate shortcut. It is useful for planning but not a guarantee.
Can I use a different target?
Yes. More conservative plans may use a higher multiple than 25x annual spending.
